I think it says alot for the humanity of the Israelis that they didn't just shoot the kid in the head. I don't agree with alot of what Sharon has done, even alot of IDF soldiers do not agree with the politicians , but the soldiers themselves are professional in the extreme.

I've just flown back from Paris (and going back Sunday night) and was held up for two hours at Chalres De Galle while the sniffer dogs checked out a suspicious package. What pisses me off is that I should be in bed with Mrs SLH instead of still up working!

Hamas Founder DEAD

evenin y'all, I've been working in Paris for the week so have seen the news on CNN and the only English paper I could glance at in the few moments I have had free was the Herald tribune. My question would be why did they only kill this one guy and his sons. If they were going to do this then why not go balls out and kill the top 10 guys in Hamas. You'll notice that the guy Hamas has nominated as the new leader in Gaza is more of a radical than Yassin. In the short term Hamas will be looking to retaliate and the violence will spiral further but I don't think anyone can criticise the decision to take out Yassin - he was the organiser of bombing campaigns and while the US is having the 911 congressional inquiry they wanted a high profile target taken out for the headlines.
My concern is that this was not done to fight terrorism - Hamas is like a chimera and will have several people to step into Yassin's shoes at little notice, it was actually done to play with the power balance in Gaza. Arrafat is becoming more and more marginalised and this will give him a chance to avoid hamas stepping into the power vacuum. What has been ignored is two things - firstly the real power in Hamas is based in Lebanon and Syria, the actual leader of Hamas is not in Gaza. Secondly the best way to combat Hamas is at grass roots level. Hamas runs food distribution centres and helps the population on the ground so they have great popular support. To combat terrorism you have to deal with the root causes and win hearts and minds, I do not think that the USA is doing enough to address the issue at a basic level.
Just as a point of history, the only time a major power has won a guerilla war against insurgents was when the Brits beat the living daylights out of the rebels in Malaya. The reason we won was that we used the SAS - the best soldiers in the world, alongside a vigourous campaign of grass roots hearts and minds capture. If you get the support of the locals then terrorism cannot operate.
As an aside I have been watching the congressional hearings on CNN. Rumsfelt came across very well as a savvy politician who was well aware of the big picture. IMHO Bush came across badly although I will say he has surrounded himself with some good people in Rumsfeldt and Colin Powell. Also Ben Cohen - Clinton's defence secretary, came across as a very intelligent and very professional politician, this week I have seen a side of American politics rarely seen over here.

"whites only" scholarship
by crownboy inthe aclu has recently defended the right of a college republican group to issue a "whites only" scholarship on free speech grounds.
even before knowing the aclu (of which i am a proud member) was involved, my sentiments pretty much mirrored their's.

This is interesting, I guess it comes down to whether you thinmk affirmative action is right or not.
Personally I think that rascism is a terrible thing in any form but affirmative action is an attempt to even the complete lack of balance in your society. It's almost like a guilt payment for all the crap things you have done to the blacks over the years. The action of the Republican group may be seen as a free speech issue but to be honest it smacks of a 'well if you can be rascist to us then we'll do it back to you' which is not only petulent but ignores the obvious inequality that already exists.

Okay, this is just weird, but what do you think?
by spiritwalker inokay this is really off the wall, or maybe i am reading to much religious history and sci-fi publications, but this had me wondering last night and i had to post it.
i was reading some information lately on how ancient people might have viewed alien visitation in their lives.
many people figure that this might be something viewed as gods and perhaps some of the legends or even the highest religious books, are based some visitations from other worlds.

You should read 'Chariots of the gods' I started reading it and it was a little off the wall for me but it goes down similar paths to what you have mentioned.
If you look at the symetrical patterns used by the incas on the high plateaus in south America, the shape can only be seen properly from the air. Why would they have made them if not for visitors?

P**sing Into the Wind?
by patio34 ini haven't been reading much political stuff here as i've been feeling overwhelmed.
the more i read, condone the what seems to me to be blatant criminal and bigoted actions of the current administration.
i'm not going to defend those statements, it's my opinion and i know the right-wingers are "true believers" when it comes to bush, et al.. i'll be in the fray in other ways, but not on this board.

have found from reading some of the more reasonable posters that my ideas and opinions have changed over time, just goes to show I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks
To be honest Xena I thnk it's great that people can be somewhat open minded. I think alot of the bile spewed on some of the other threads is down to people being frustrated that others don't see things the same way as they do. I know is really gets under my skin when I see what I consider as people ignoring the truth and ignoring facts.
I try not to be too judgemental of people with conservative views even though my politics are pretty far left of centre but sometimes I read stuff here that just lights my fuse. Feelings are running high over Iraq and over stuff like the gay marraige debate, mainly because the underlying issues cut to the core of personal value systems. While people are free to hold their own opinions people will never agree all the time, and some people will disagree all of the time. Our views are based on our personal experience and the environment in which we grew up and live now. Whilst it would be nice to think we could all agree to disagree I think it's human nature to try and convince others that your opinion is the right one.
I WILL convince Yeru to vote Democrat before November...... yeah right!

Presidents State of the Union address

this is what the president meant to say last year in his address.. http://homepage.mac.com/webmasterkai/kaicurry/gwbush/stateofthe.html

Yeru, ignoring the truth does not make an arguement either. This president has done more to erode the seperation of church and state than any other - the attempt to ban gay marriage is nothing short of bigotted hatred and comes from nothing more than the imposition of gay hating Christian morals.
As to Iraq I will say this, if you don't think the WMD excuse was a lie then why were the UN weapons inspectors ushered out of the country when they were being effective? Was it so they didn't remove the sole remaining excuse to invade?
